“Lessons” is a song about Stormzy’s ex-girlfriend, TV and radio presenter Maya Jama. The two split up in August 2019.

Many media outlets speculated that the rapper was unfaithful to Jama, by mingling with fellow friend and singer, Jorja Smith. In response to such rumors, Stormzy’s representatives have categorically denied any form of infidelity. During a January 2020 interview with Hot 97, Stormzy himself stated that, while he had “disrespected” Maya Jama, he did not cheat on her. In an interview with Charlamagne Tha God, he further elaborated:
