Holly Humberstone – Scarlett Lyrics

Holly Humberstone – Scarlett Lyrics
Scarlett Lyrics by Holly Humberstone
“Scarlett” takes its name from a childhood friend of Holly’s, who also briefly features in the track’s music video. Holly sings from the perspective of Scarlett, following the end of a one-sided romantic relationship.
As one of her closest friends, Holly helped Scarlett through the breakup and wrote the song as an ode to her strength, as explained in the description of the symbolic music video:
She vented to me for probably about a year and so I went through all the stages of a break up with her and watched as she slowly realized her worth and that he wasn’t worth her tears anymore.
Sonically, the scream-crying-sing-a-long tune clashes with her second EP, The Walls Are Way Too Thin, and was named as her favourite track to date.
In an interview with Coup De Main, Holly revealed that album-mate “Thursday” was written about the same break-up, when Scarlett’s boyfriend “hadn’t quite cut ties yet.”
[Verse 1]
You said, “Darling, will we go the distance?”
In such blissful ignorance
Couldn’t hit more, like a bolt from the blue
And hate me— If you’re gonna hate me
But just say it plainly with everything lately
I just need the truth
(Looking back)
[Pre-Chorus]
We go together, like bad British weather
On the one day I made plans
So go hell for leather, and know that it’s out of my hands
Go ahead now
[Chorus]
‘Cause I cried all the summer away
Ooh, you left me waiting on a heartbreak
I just cried all the summer away
Now, I’m drunk and screaming your name
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
And I will show myself out
Ooh-ooh-ooh
I know I adore you
I don’t need you now
[Verse 2]
I said, “Darling, will we go the distance?”
As I stood there, pouring my heart out
With you just completely unfazed
[Pre-Chorus]
And you said, “Scarlett, I don’t need to be responsible for everything you’re feeling
You’re emotional grim reaper, I feel bad for you
I can’t entertain these games, hate to rain on your parade
It’s just the way I’m feeling
It’s just the way I’m feeling”
[Chorus]
‘Cause I cried all the summer away
Ooh, you left me waiting on a heartbreak
I just cried all the summer away
Now, I’m drunk and screaming your name
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
And I will show myself out
Ooh-ooh-ooh
I know I adore you
I don’t need you now
[Post-Chorus]
(Uh-uh-uh, uh-uh-uh, uh-uh-uh)
I don’t need you now
(Uh-uh-uh, uh-uh-uh, uh-uh-uh)
[Chorus]
‘Cause I cried all the summer away
Ooh, you left me waiting on a heartbreak
I just cried all the summer away
Now, I’m drunk and screaming your name
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
And I will show myself out
Ooh-ooh-ooh
I know I adore you
I don’t need you now
