On “Difficult,” Gracie delves into internal struggles she faces daily surrounding several aspects of her life. Putting her whole insecurities on display, Gracie does not shy away from admitting vulnerability and honesty when it comes to her family, love life and own decisions.

Gracie has always been candid about honesty and wanting her music and vulnerability to connect with other people. In her 2020 bandwagon interview, she expresses:

When it comes to my music, I feel like I am the most vulnerable that I could possible be. And so, my music, I always hope is always a reflection of that. […] I hope it makes other people feel less alone.”

Through the use of drums, bass, piano and an acoustic guitar, Gracie and Aaron Dessner were able to create a gloomy environment suitable for the themes of the song. Throughout the chorus, mirroring the intensity of her emotions, the cadence accelerates, reflecting Gracie’s continuous frustration and angst.
