Ellie Goulding – JOY Lyrics
JOY Lyrics by Ellie Goulding
On “Joy” (stylised in capitals on Spotify & Soundcloud), Ellie Goulding learns that her lover no longer brings her happiness.
Featuring a whirlwind pickup towards the end, Ellie turns sadness into a moment of pure clarity with her ethereal vocals swelling over a string section and live backing drums.
The heavily orchestrated track features production from Goudling and frequent collaborator Jim Elliot who produced 6 other tracks from parent album Halcyon with her. “Joy” is also featured on the extended repackage released a year later entitled Halcyon Days.
Ellie Goulding once said in an interview that a lot of her second album, Halcyon was about heartbreak. She said: “Sometimes I’d look at the lyrics I was coming up with and realise that I had all this sadness inside me.”
[Verse 1]
Stood in the rain and watched you go
I feel a lump in my throat
And this is far from joy
I never seemed to learn
That high makes things harder
That high I get from you
[Chorus]
I’ve figured out that joy is not in your arms
I know I’ll always ache with an empty heart
I think it’s time to run because I’m seeing stars
I’m seeing stars watch me fall apart
[Verse 2]
I think of dying all the time
But I’ve got joy to take my side
Fear is my favorite ride ooh hey Hoh
[Chorus]
I’ve figured out that joy is not in your arms
I know I’ll always ache with an empty heart
I think it’s time to run because I’m seeing stars
I’m seeing stars watch me fall apart
[Interlude]
And then you see, ooh
[Chorus]
I’ve figured out that joy is not in your arms
I know I’ll always ache with an empty heart
I think it’s time to run because I’m seeing stars
I’m seeing stars watch me fall apart
