Dirt Femme is Tove Lo’s fifth studio album and first to be released as an independent artist under her own record label, Pretty Swede Records, after fulfilling her contract with Universal Music.

Having complete creative freedom, the Swedish singer based Dirt Femme on the relationship and journey with her femininity, describing it as “extremely personal.” Written and recorded through the course of the pandemic, she worked with longtime and new collaborators, including producers Ludvig Söderberg, SG Lewis and Tim Nelson, and rapper Channel Tres and folk duo First Aid Kit as featured artists.

Tove Lo launched the album cycle in January 2022 with the release of “How Long,” her first since 2020, and originally as part of the soundtrack to the second season of Euphoria but later also included on Dirt Femme.

On the comments under some of her TikTok videos, she later announced that the album would be released in the fall, and in a different video, she shared that the its title was two words, the first beginning with “D” and the second with “F.”

On May 3, “No One Dies from Love” was released as the album’s official first single, marking Tove’s first-ever independent release.

After two years without stepping on a stage, she kicked off an spring tour later in May, debuting “True Romance” and “2 Die 4” before their release. In June, on a later date of the tour, a band member was seen wearing a t-shirt that revealed the album’s title, only days before its official announcement and the release of “True Romance.”

“2 Die 4” and “Grapefruit” followed as the fourth and fifth overall singles, respectively.

Besides the accompanying music videos for the singles, Tove Lo produced “scenes” (how she labels visualizers) for all of the songs on the album that comprise a Dirt Femme short-film.
