A Musician’s Nature is the debut studio album by rapper Hayden Forbes. This album has been in the making for 2.5 years, starting with the first writings in November 2019. Consisting of 16 songs, this album is the accumulation of Hayden’s years of writing music until that point, almost chaptering different moments from age 16-19.

The theme of this album is two-fold. The first being the obvious, a lot of songs consist of nature-themed titles such as “Rose Petals”, “SnowBanks”, and “Summertime”. The other meaning is a play on words, the non-nature titles are songs that are in a “musician’s nature” to make: songs about having fun making music (“Swing Around”), breakups (“Never Tried”), and striving to live your dreams (“Chasing Dreams”).

The lead single was “Rose Petals”, released on May 1, 2020. This was also the first song written for the record. The second single was “SnowBanks”, released on October 15, 2021. The cause of delay simply being both Hayden focusing on getting a lot more of the album polished before swinging into full release mode, while also handling his first year of college (with most focus on that). The album would eventually be released on September 16, 2022.

The album went through many different phases, with the album originally consisting of 13 tracks (3 of which are no longer on the album). After being unsatisfied with how some songs had turned out, Hayden went back to the drawing board. He looked at some of his favorite songs from his originally planned debut, which was scrapped. From this, he revived “Chasing Dreams”, “Thinkin’ Again” (now “Airwaves”), “Insomnia”, and “Paradox of Feelings”. This also led Hayden to add the two skits: “Sunshine” and “Moonlight”. However, there were more songs planned for the album that have never seen the light of day.

The features of the album consist of grade school friends, college friends, and people he’s met through making music. This also helps drive the almost diary-like perspective.

Hayden has been quoted as saying:

My goal with [A Musician’s Nature] was to truly hit every mark. If I was to make an album, let alone a debut album, that was named after making music about all these different things, I really wanted to try and include everything. That’s why if you look in this, you’ll find songs about love, songs about heartbreak, songs about childhood, songs about my life now as an adult, diss tracks, freestyles, happy songs, sad, angry, heavy, wavy, acoustic, synth. I really love everything on this project and looking at each song opens a chapter in my life and brings back memories of where I was when it came to be. It’s a time capsule I will always hold dear to my heart.
